Welcome / Introductions. |
Thanks to Chris for hosting and for providing free drinks! |
Chris gave an introduction to the club: Given grounds in 1856 by a lady for the furtherance of cricket, only people who could vote were cricket members. Consequently don’t have ground rent to pay, are own masters, shielded from some of the problems other clubs face. Have 70 colts, struggling to keep 3 teams running. Membership is important, 5 sides and vets down from 8 in football, numbers also down at tennis. If membership is down, compensate with social functions. Live events at the club, get various acts people can come for free. Wine and dine, quizzes, good structure and commitment from members. |

Minutes of the last General Meeting on 12th June 2017. |
Meetings with council officers and members have taken place to discuss maintenance of facilities. Worry facilities are not safe, health and safety concern. |
Renegotiating leases that have expired is another major issue. Difficult to get responses from council. Each club to keep arguing it’s position. Council pre-occupied with elections at the moment. Need to think about developing a strategy if council remain unresponsive. |
Firs Farm is a concern, pavilion has been destroyed, bookings for pitches not being taken. |
New synthetic pitch at Enfield Playing fields is now operational. |

Significant issues facing individual clubs. |
Mick - Table Tennis young kids & older people, gap in the middle. |
Graham - Trying to incorporate the membership is harder, people not staying after matches. Donations and sponsorship, now only running two teams but considering reducing to one. Cost of maintaining pitches is greater. |
Kevin - a lot of activity around safeguarding, concussion, up-skilling coaches. Ignatians think there is a massive opportunity on the other side of the A10, trying to attract people. College in Ponders End interested in developing rugby. |
Catherine - Time consuming sport which doesn’t attract. Also note people not spending time at the bar, was a big revenue stream is not now. People want to play and then go. Knows of one club that lost 50 members. Are a council ground but having to take on more maintenance running costs are the same as income so surviving. Notice the gap in the middle. Have kept membership fees at the same level for 3 years. |
Amount of time have to think about tennis is very small. |
Chris - have to raise a levy, have not raised membership fees, levy has generated activity. Separate accounts for each section but all come together as one account. Not so many people in middle range who may want to take on volunteering. |
Roger - cricket on Sundays is almost a dead duck, difficult to raise teams. Development league is helping, older and young playing together. Council has withdrawn services for cleaning and maintaining the ground. Income over the bar has reduced, social functions to keep self afloat. |
Chris - Handball, strong growth in the education sector also in the number of clubs formed since London 2012. Growth particularly strong in London thanks to support from School Games organisers and the London Youth Games. Montel had been involved in some Handball activity in Guildford earlier in the week. Filiz an enthusiastic handball coach in Enfield also working in Haringey and Islington. Chris to send contact details to Montel. |
